Train in the U.S., Fly for a UK Airline

There is a severe worldwide pilot shortage, and UK airlines are hiring aggressively. But to fly commercially for British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, easyJet, or Ryanair, you must hold a UK CAA Flight Crew License.

You train with us in California, earn your FAA ratings in world-class conditions, then follow a clear conversion path to a UK CAA license. We guide you through every step.

Important: You cannot fly commercially in the UK on a standalone FAA license. A full conversion to a UK CAA Flight Crew License is required before any UK airline will review your application.

How to Train in the U.S. as a UK Citizen

To train at Sling as an international student you will need an M-1 Student Visa — a non-immigrant visa specifically for vocational training. Flight school qualifies.

Sling Pilot Academy is authorized to issue the I-20 form — the document you present to the U.S. Embassy when applying. We handle the paperwork; you focus on flying.

The FAA also requires pilots with foreign addresses to designate a U.S. Agent for Service to receive FAA documents on your behalf. We can help you navigate this too.

After Sling: Converting Your FAA License to UK CAA

Once you complete your FAA training, here is the conversion path to a UK CAA Flight Crew License — your ticket to flying commercially for a UK airline.

Step 01

UK CAA Class 1 Medical

Your FAA medical is not valid for UK commercial operations. You must pass a comprehensive exam at a UK-approved Aeromedical Centre.

  • Must be completed at a UK CAA-approved Aeromedical Centre
  • FAA medical certificates are not accepted
  • Schedule early — wait times can be several weeks
Step 02

13 ATPL Theoretical Exams

Enroll in a UK-approved ground school and pass all 13 ATPL theory exams covering a wide range of aviation subjects.

  • Air Law & ATC Procedures
  • Meteorology & Navigation
  • Aircraft General Knowledge & Performance
  • Human Performance & Flight Planning
Step 03

Flight Training at a UK ATO

Complete a localized training course at a UK Approved Training Organization, followed by formal skill tests with a UK CAA examiner.

  • Minimum 8 hours of CPL flight training
  • Minimum 15 hours of Instrument Rating training
  • Formal skill test with a UK CAA examiner
Step 04

Radiotelephony License (FRTOL)

Pass the UK Flight Radiotelephony Operator's License test — certifying your mastery of British and ICAO airspace phraseology.

  • Practical test with an approved examiner
  • Covers British/ICAO ATC phraseology
  • Required before exercising CPL privileges
Already started in the UK?

Bring your current training records — we’ll help map the FAA path.

Some students come to Sling after starting a UK licence or completing part of their training elsewhere. Admissions can review your licence, ratings, hours, and training records, then outline what may count, what still needs to be completed under FAA rules, and what may later need to be converted or revalidated for the UK.

UK Airline Employment Requirements

Once your license is fully converted, you must meet the standard entry criteria for UK airlines. Here is what to prepare for.

What UK Airlines Look For

Airlines like British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, easyJet, and Ryanair assess you against clear hiring criteria. With your Sling training and UK CAA conversion, you'll be well positioned to meet them.

Notably, UK airlines do not sponsor work visas for entry-level pilots. You must already have the right to work — via UK or Irish passport, or settled status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. If you already hold a UK CAA licence or have completed partial UK training, Sling can help you review the FAA route for the ratings you still need. Depending on your background, this may include FAA foreign licence verification, TSA approval, visa/I-20 steps, and any required FAA knowledge or practical tests. If your goal is UK airline employment, you may later need to convert or revalidate those FAA privileges back to UK CAA standards.
